Tech Requirements for Tutors
To provide the best online learning experience to your students, you will require the following tools:
Fast and Reliable Computer
This can be a desktop, laptop or tablet. We don’t recommend teaching from your smartphone. You should have at least a 1Ghz processor and minimum of 256MB of RAM on a Windows system and at least a 1Ghz Intel processor (Core 2 Duo) and a minimum of 1GB of RAM for a Mac. Quite simply, the faster your system is, the more reliable your connection will be.
Broadband/High Speed Internet Connection
This should be at least 400 Kbps (standard Cable or DSL connection should work fine). For the best video chat experience, plug your computer directly into the wall. TIP: To test your connection; upload and download speeds: Click Here
Webcam
Preferably this would be HD. Your students will notice a big difference. If your computer or tablet was purchased within the last 5 years, your webcam will be more than good enough. If it’s older than 5 years you should consider replacing it as they are quite inexpensive.
Microphone
Most laptops or tablets have built in mics. For the best quality and to enhance the learning experience, you may want to consider investing in a USB external mic. This is only a suggestion; it isn’t required.
Headphones
Most laptops or tablets have built in speakers. Using a headphones to enhance the experience allows you to hear yourself clearly with less interference. The final recommendation is the ability to create digital copies of additional lesson material. When teaching lessons through our virtual classroom, additional lesson material can be uploaded directly onto the whiteboard. The whiteboard content is then emailed to the student along with their homework as soon as the classroom is closed.
